CHAPTER ELEVEN

AFTER HER DISASTROUS behavior of the night before—otherwise known as the kiss that would live in infamy—Ellie decided it was time to get serious about finding a man.

She was so desperate that she’d even considered calling Charles Phillips, the limp-lipped kisser, but had finally concluded after three stomachaches and much tooth-gnashing that it wouldn’t be worth it.

But Ellie had to find someone!

There was no way in hell that she wanted to stir things up with Michael again. She’d been down that dead-end road before. And just because he seemed different, acted more mature and considerate—kissing aside—she didn’t trust him not to hurt her, and she couldn’t go through that again.

Will was frowning deeply at Ellie when she entered the gym, and she supposed he could see through her clothing that she’d pigged out the night before.

The fat cells had been multiplying at a rapid rate!

“You look bloated. Have you been drinking your water?” he asked, shaking his head and making a face of disgust. “You are never going to lose weight if you don’t follow my instructions, Ellie.”

She had the grace to blush. “You know I don’t like to drink water unless I’m eating something, Will. It’s just so blah. But I’ll try to do better.”

I’ll drink water with my pizza next time, instead of Coke. How’s that for a compromise?

“Step on the scale and let’s see how you’ve done this week. You’ve skipped your workout twice since last Saturday.”

“I know. I’ve been—” stuffing my face and eating until there’s no tomorrow “—busy at work,” she lied, to protect the innocent.

Dreading the moment of truth, Ellie slipped off her shoes and stepped onto the scale, waiting while her very annoyed trainer fiddled with the weights, then fiddled some more. “I don’t understand,” he said, his brows wrinkling in confusion. “You’ve gained almost three pounds.” Will gazed at her intently. “What have you been eating?”

The question she’d been expecting had finally come, and Ellie hated having to answer it. Will had been trying so hard to help her, and she was a big disappointment, not only to him, but also to herself. “I’ve been under a bit of stress lately. I guess I’ve indulged in some rather poor food choices.”

“Indulged? I’ll say you’ve indulged. It looks as if you’ve been pouring the food down your throat. What do you do, put it in a blender? Well, there’s only one way to get it off. And it’ll do wonders for your stress.”

She smiled sickly, asking in a small voice, “Treadmill?”

“That’s right. And you’ll need to do at least forty minutes today. You are certainly not as disciplined as your mother. You should try to follow her example. Rosemary is very dedicated.”

“Yeah, well she’s the reason I eat so much. And there’s that other thing, too.”

Taking her hand as if she were a small child, Will led Ellie to a wooden bench. “Tell me everything.
